Seven Gifts to Fight Seven Sins

Sometimes it would be nice if the world was just black and white. If everything was either considered a sin or a virtue. Then we would know if what we were doing was wrong or right and wouldn’t have to guess if it’s both. While life isn’t actually that easy, there are some ways that help simplify sins and virtues: the seven deadly sins, seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and seven virtues.

The seven deadly sins are seven categories that all sins fall into: sloth, envy, greed, gluttony, lust, anger, and pride. Fortunately, the Holy Spirit gave us seven gifts to fight these sins: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These seven gifts lead us to seven virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, faith, charity, and hope.

Recently in my life, I have started to notice how the seven deadly sins are taking over my life. I feel like everything I do is one of these sins. At first, I didn’t know how to fight against these sins. I did some research and discovered the seven gifts of the the Holy Spirit and their corresponding virtues. These gave me something to strive towards instead of just trying to stop something else.

As the seven deadly sins, seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and virtues are such a big part of my life, I want to share my personal thoughts, stories, and struggles on them. Every month, I will be sharing one post on a seven deadly sin and another post on the gift and virtue given to us to fight that sin. This will start next month in July. I hope sharing my struggles and knowledge on these will help someone else fight against sin and come closer to virtue.
